Mastering Number in EYFS and KS1

The NECTM Mastering Number aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number. Attention will be given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through KS1 to support success in the future.

In Larch Class each year group follows a programme consisting of four 10 minute sessions each week (outside of the timetabled maths lesson) and is aimed at developing children’s fluency and flexibility with number. New resources are used, including rekenreks, which are necessary to deliver the sessions.

  Using a rekenrek.

Extra-curricular learning opportunities:

At Sutton VA Primary School, we strive to offer a rich and varied range of extra-curricular opportunities for pupils. These include our before school and Football and gymnastics clubs, musical instrument tuition, Values and Global Learning events as well as themed days. A range of suggested Learning Log tasks which parents and carers can engage with to extend and consolidate learning outside of school, are sent home each term. To assist you in this, see termly curriculum overviews, monthly newsletters and Class news on our website, which is updated weekly with photographs.
